1.COMMUNITY EXTENSION SERVICES OFFICE

I.MISSON, VISION & OBJECTIVES

VISION

To respond to the needs of the community, improve the quality of life, and have a greater impact on the society with special focus on the underprivileged.

MISSION

To provide appropriate services needed by the community and improve community living conditions through viable programs and services in cooperation and coordination with different agencies and entities.

OBJECTIVES

1. To promote extension projects through self-help process in target communities.
2. To implement programs and services that target beneficiaries could undertake in their own community.
3. Design a program wherein beneficiaries/communities will serve as channels for technology development, promotion, adoption and utilization.
4. Improve the quality of life of deprived and underprivileged communities by implementing viable projects and programs.
5. Coordinate with other sectors of the school community e.g. all schools/colleges, offices and departments, the students including the alumni and other agencies, and GOs and NGOs for complementation of services.

II. PROGRAMS

1. Health, Nutrition & Sanitation Literacy. This project involves deliberation about and discussion on basic health issues to elementary students and teachers. Proponent of this undertaking is the College of Nursing. Activities in this area cover:

  • First Aid Training (Nursing)
  • Nutrition Education (Nursing)
  • Herbal Medicine Preparation/Demonstration (Nursing)
  • Ascaris Exam (Medtech Dept)

2. Family Life Program. The Faculty of the College of Nursing conducts free seminars and teachings on family life, proper nutrition and health and sanitation to parents of partner communities. Activities include:

  • Family Planning Education (Nursing)
  • Drug Awareness and Prevention Education (Criminology Dept)

3. Livelihood Skills/Capability Building – the School of Hotel, Restaurant & Institution Management & the School of Business with capable facilitators, will be utilized to teach and train mothers and other unemployed residents of partner barangays skills that would help augment family income. This will be accomplished through demonstrations, trainings and workshops:

a.Project EASY (teaching/demo on food processing meal preparation, table setting etc.)
b.Simple business management training/workshop) (BME)

4. Computer Literacy Program. The College of Computer Studies will lead a literacy program on information technology to teachers and students of partner communities/school. The program targets computer-literate beneficiaries who have the potential to assist others. This program also aims to help teachers improve in their reports, lesson plans and examinations works.

5. Free Annual Medical Clinic – The College annually organizes one free medical mission, targeting not just the partner-community but also other communities that need medical attention. The mission will include, if available and possible, the following:

a. Dental services
b. Circumcision for male children
c. Free medicines
d. Animal Vaccination
e. Seminar/Film Showing on Rabies etc.

6. Summer Sports Clinic – This program targets in- and out-of-school youth of neighboring barangays and schools in cooperation with other agencies and entities as sponsor. Free training on sports will be given to participants. This is to train the youth the value of sportsmanship and camaraderie, and help curb incidences of prohibited drug use, gambling, and delinquency.

7. Information Education & Communication – DMCCFI sponsors/hosts seminars, symposia, and conferences in and outside the school campus to for individuals and/or groups helping these individuals/groups improve their capabilities in their respective field or careers, as well as in daily living and in the preservation of humanity and the environment as a whole. DMC offers a venue free of charge and/or DMC will bring equipment outside the school if needed. The following are the currently sponsored programs:

  • Symposia on Global Warming (2007-2009)
  • Information Drive on Influenza A(H1N1) (2008-2009)
  • Dengue Awareness (followed by de-fogging in affected area/s)
  • Barangay Forum on newly passed laws (e.g. RA 9262)

8. Environmental Campaign – The school sponsors, leads, and joins clean-up drives and activities or events that encourage environmental consciousness and sensitivity, be they local, regional, or national, in synch with national agency celebrations.

  • Clean-up of marine sanctuary, canals, streets and shorelines
  • Tree planting (through the SAVE ME Movement)

9. Outreach Programs -This project is created with the intention of awakening the school community’s sensitivity to the needs of underprivileged individuals and communities As this is carried out by the whole DMC community, this program also aims to improve interrelationship within and among the DMC staff, faculty, and administration. The outreach is conducted every year during the Founding Anniversary, the Holiday Season and in the event of natural calamities. Beneficiaries are usually the partner-communities although other communities that may benefit from this programs are not necessarily precluded.

  • Outreach at the Reformatory Center
  • Outreach at Carmelite Homes, BDSK etc.
  • Bundles of Joy (for the SHS)

III. HISTORY

Before the establishment of the Office of the Community Extension Services in the latter part of year 2007, DMC assists the outside community through the respective extension activities and programs of the different colleges/departments.

IV.CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

DMC science high school students and faculty help bring back the natural beauty of Dipolog’s shores.

Picking up trash and debris, students hope to contribute to the preservation of our coastline.
